Just an idea came into my mind. I now understand why my classmates are skipping/cutting classes or most of the time inattentive during lectures. It is just we all have different learning styles that suites our interest. As I have noticed, they are not dumb but they cannot understand what we are studying. I have observed that the approach of most teachers does not catch the attention of the class. It is often boring that is why students are not capable of focusing. There are also times that the teacher cannot balance his/her level of teaching on the students’ level of understanding. It makes it way harder for students to cope with the lesson making them more unmotivated to study.
Another reason is, students are being forced into studying what they do not like. Do not get me wrong, I know how important it is to study different topics from Mathematics to Literature, and to other subjects but not everyone learns through reading books and attending lectures. The current education system does not utilize the creative, technical, and practical skills of the students. They are often boxed in the four corners of the classroom and being tested on how much they have memorized the content of the books. There are many of my classmates who enjoy sports more than academics. There are also who are better at being creative such as doing artworks and singing/dancing. A lot are also great in using computers. They may not like academics that much but there is something they are good at but it’s not being highlighted in school.
Realizing about these things, I think I was wrong in judging them for being purely irresponsible and undisciplined. It is just they are different from me. I like studying and learning and I am good at it. They have their own interests that they enjoy. While contemplating about it, it made me just believe more about the Theory of Multiple Intelligence. Everyone is smart in their own ways. Maybe my classmates are intelligent but not in a way that is acceptable to the society as it only accepted those who are academically smart— those who have high grades. I realized that they should not envy me for being “smart” because I do not possess talents they have. It is basically not having everything you want in this world.
I wrote this not to tolerate my classmates being a “not good student” but I only wanted to debunk the idea that everyone is born to be a good student. I believe a person can also learn outside the school by experiencing it himself/herself. Not everyone is meant to be an enthusiast of the academe world. But if a person really wants to learn, effort and time must be exerted. It is not easy but it will be all worth it. And to all the students striving, there is nothing also wrong with forcing yourself to study even you do not like it. We all have our own purposes why we are studying whether we do it voluntarily or forcefully. I hope you do not get overwhelmed by the pressure your parents, friends, teachers, and the society in general in you. We must enjoy our life as a student, do not stress yourself too much.
